Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles), Michelle studied printmaking and molecular biology at UC Berkeley.

After graduating, she worked as a public school teacher of K-8 science in Philadelphia while earning her M.S. in Education. It was only during a discussion of “big audacious goals” with her seventh grade students early in the school year that Michelle realized she had a big goal too: to illustrate picture books. This goal continued to pull at her until she returned to Los Angeles four years later.

When not figuring out stories, Michelle works independently as a graphic designer/illustrator and also designs for a children’s clothing line that she co-founded. She also enjoys sewing, hiking, animals (especially bears) and coffee breaks.
